This is a clear example of how God takes care of his people. It reminds me of another scripture - Romans 8:31 "If God is for us, who can be against us?" If we could just learn to trust him completely with our lives, instead of waivering in our faith. God has done wonderful miracles in my life. My goal is to not forget the incredible things he has done, and to work harder at trusting him and his guidance.
In the people's eyes the short road probably looked good but God knew that it would end with them being back in slavery. So instead he arms them and readies them for something much harder: A fight with the Egyptian army. Often things that look harder to us are the best way for us because only God can see the future and our hearts.
When we are willing to fight for God and do things his way no matter how hard we give God a chance to work mightily as he did for the Israelites. They got to see the power of God and they were able to put trust in Moses, the leader who led them along the tougher road to greater glory.
So, what does this tell me about God? When things get tougher and tougher it could be that God is just getting my life ready for his mighty power to be displayed. What an awesome God!
As I read this scripture I began trying to put myself in the text. Imagine walking through a desert with an endless sky following the pillar of cloud, and imagine walking through the dark desert night following an amazing pillar of FIRE!!!! Incredible. But that is just the start of an unbelievable journey with God. Put yourself in the desert encamped together. All the churches of Detroit, Grand Rapids, K-Zoo, Lansing, and even a few from Indiana and Ohio, all encamped together on the barren sand of the desert, just following the Lord God Almighty out of bondage and slavery. Following the pillar of cloud and fire. See the Egyptian army bearing down on you, hear the words of the faithful leader Moses and walk to the sea and watch it part with your very own eyes!! Your hope begins to rise, you perhaps get goosebumps as you see God's powerful hand at work. Cross the sea and watch it consume an "all-star" army as God brings glory, honor and praise to His name.
Now church, lets step back and see what does this tell me about God. This tells me that God is going to lead me down some roads that seem longer than they should. God may allow armies of adversity to come may, but by his amazing grace and power He will be glorified and his people will be saved!! AMEN!! Let us not look to our shortcomings and say "it" cant be done, but let us look to our ALL POWERFUL GOD and say I will follow you LORD, wherever you lead me!!
