Matthew 5-7 tells me a lot about God! These chapters are rich with profound yet very understandable and simple teachings. This tells me that God wanted to give everyone a chance to understand the guidelines for living for God. The lessons are very clear and very practical. They are simple, not a whole lot of hyperbole or metaphor. I think after the crowds heard Jesus teach, they must have had a pretty complete understanding of what it means to follow Jesus – to be his disciple. At the end of chapter 7 it says, “the crowds were amazed at his teachings, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” Can you imagine being there to hear Jesus teach all of this? These chapters sound powerful even when I read them out loud, I can’t even fathom how powerful and meaningful it would be to hear Jesus speak these words. Seeing that God sent his son to do many things – among which is articulate the law for everyone, shows me that God truly wanted everyone to come to him. Not just scholars, but God wanted everyone – anyone with ears – to hear and understand his word. To me, it is almost like leveling the playing field.
